First Workshop of 2016-2017!

The LADYS Program Cville has officially kicked off for the 2016-2017 academic year! The first meeting consisted of the parent Dare to Dream Orientation and the LADYS Reach for the Stars Workshop. This introductory event is held for LADYS and their parents to familiarize themselves with the program and meet the participating mentors. Upon a brief overview of the program and personal introductions of all participants, the LADYS and mentors set aside to mingle in their workshop while the parents went over important program information and documentation.

The Reach for the Stars Workshop was initiated with the icebreaker game, “train wreck” in which both LADYS and mentors exchanged personal goals. This was an excellent activity for the LADYS and mentors to bond through relevant goals. Additionally, the LADYS created their own Vision Boards, a small collage of their personal goals. This visual representation of their personal goals is a creative way to raise self-esteem. This Vision Board will serve as a daily reminder of their goals and inspire the girls to continue to “Reach for the Stars.”

While the LADYS and mentors bonded through their Vision Boards, the parents attended the Dare to Dream Orientation where they received a program overview, reviewed program expectations, and completed necessary documentation. It was truly inspiring to help one of the mothers who unfortunately was not literate but nevertheless was enthusiastic that there is a program that aims to equip young minority women to pursue a higher education. This strong mother “Dared to Dream” that better opportunities are within reach for her daughter. #Literacy #WomenEmpowerment
